The mission of the Ojibwa Community Library is to provide a collection of print and non-print materials to meet the lifelong learning, recreational, research, cultural, and informational needs of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community to include the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College and ages ranging from pre-school to elders.
The Ojibwa Community library is located at 409 Superior Avenue, Baraga, Michigan. It was opened in 2002 to serve the students of Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College and the community. The library is open to the public. The library has 6 Internet-linked computers available for use by patrons and provides free wireless Internet access. The library has a large selection of Native American books, periodicals and movies as well as popular fiction, non-fiction, children's books, and audio books. Ojibwa Community Library participates in the Upper Peninsula Region of Library Cooperation (UPRLC), which provides access to over 1.5 million volumes through interlibrary loan. The Ojibwa Community Library received an Enhancement Grant from the Institutes of Museum and Library Services in Washington, DC. This is a $137,657 two year grant to enhance the services of the library. The title of the grant is Ji-mashawiidookawindwaa Ikwewag (Empowering Futures) Project. The library will be working with the KBIC's Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) to provide safe library services for the guests of the Transition House. The library will work with the KBIC's Department of Health and Human Service's" Positively You" group which is comprised of junior and senior high school girls that are tribal members or tribal descendants.
The grant will be through years 2012-2014.
