Ojibwa Housing Authority
With the implementation of
the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-determination Act (NAHASDA)
of 1996, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community of Michigan elected to retain
its independently operated, Indian Housing Authority as promulgated in
KBIC Tribal Ordinance adopted January 20. 1977. The Ojibwa Housing Authority
(OHA) shall continue to operate and provide management for all US Department
of Housing and Urban Development Housing Programs for the Keweenaw Bay
Indian Community of Michigan. This was done by designating the Housing
Authority as the Tribe's Tribally Designated Housing Entity.
The goal of the Ojibwa Housing
Authority are to provide affordable and attractive housing opportunities
in a safe and healthy environment to qualifying members of the Keweenaw
Bay Indian Community, encourage self-improvement of the community's low-income
families, and provide employment opportunities.
The Board of Commissioners
plays an essential role in helping the Tribe meet its goals regarding
housing issues. Commission members can make a difference by taking an
active interest in housing, setting personal examples of integrity, and
taking appropriate action when fraud is suspected or management problems
become apparent.
